Lesson 3:
Basic sewing terms
1. Seam allowance (SA) space given on all sides to stitch it.
2. Selvage- finished edges of fabric which will have names or holes in it.
3. Fabric grain- direction of thread woven in fabric
4. Bias- 45°angle to straight line which is stretchiest part of fabric
5. Straight grain- parellel to selvage
6. Cross grain- perpendicular to selvage
7. Interfacing - cloth used to sew inside for stability and grip
8. Dart - triangular stitch used to shape fitting
9. Back or reverse stitch - used at beginning and end of every line of stitch to stop stitches from coming out.
10. Clipping- a cut made at SA @1/2" space. This allows fabric to curve without gathers
11. Topstitch- done on right side of seam
12- seam - a line of stitch is called seam.
13. Notches - v cut done on fabrics to mark some point in 2 3 fabrics together to keep in same place.
